Scorpio SR-i900 Review

Scorpio is much more than just an astrological sign - it is also the name of a motorcycle alarm product sold on the market by Aritronix since 1989. Scorpio has been innovating and pushing the industry forward throughout their time producing theft prevention systems by developing new technologies and adding useful new features. The SR-i900 is their mid-level entry and it has some unique ideas in its design, as well as the good old standards you need in any alarm system.

Scorpio claims that the SR-i900 is a ?new generation? security system based on its addition of RFID (radio-frequency identification) technology - more on this later. They also claim a half-mile distance for the two-way remote FM transceiver, which also keeps you informed of the alarm?s status while within that range. The motorcycle is covered by two advanced sensors which activate a 120dB multi-tone siren in the event of an impact, inclination or proximity violation. And, the alarm unit itself is protected against vibration, the weather, and even a smart criminal who tries to cut power to it.

The perimeter sensor, designed to set off the siren when someone or something gets too close, can be programmed to suit your needs. Whether protecting a large bagger or a stubby cafe racer, it can adjust to cover you. A dual-axis accelerometer, using an exceptionally accurate Analog Device ADXL202 version, keeps watch for any impacts or change in inclination when the alarm is set and active. This too ties into the siren and will force a chirp upon light impact, or force the siren to sound if things get a bit rougher. However, it will not only make noise.

An ignition cut-off is included as well, and you can activate it remotely in the unlikely event of a moto-jack situation. That remote will also let you know if you are away from your bike and the alarm detects a problem; it also lets you use the 120dB noise as a panic alert, if necessary. Two-way communication is augmented with an audible and vibrating alert on the remote unit so you stay connected to the motorcycle even inside your home. Signal strength and protection status are indicated on an easy to read LCD located on that remote.

RFID circuitry is included in the remote and, as you approach the bike, the alarm can be programmed to be disarmed. Alternatively, when you walk a certain distance from your ride, the alarm will arm - it can be totally hands-free. This feature can be completely disabled, of course.

Installation is a snap, as with many modern systems of this type. Scorpio differentiates itself here, though, by selling an optional OEM-specific wiring harness - not all makes and models are available yet, but they do take requests. If there is no adaptation kit, you have to manually splice it into your bike?s electrics, so be aware of this. If your bike is on the list, it makes the SR-i900 a simple plug-and-play security kit.

It is lightweight, easy to hide on most motorcycles with at least some body panels, and anyone can install, configure and operate the SR-i900 with ease. Just be certain to pay close attention to the manual, it is not easy to read but it gets the information across. Run some tests to make sure everything works (don?t forget your neighbors? ears!).

The remote does not really seem to reach its half-mile range, but it gets pretty close. The sensors work well, but pay attention to the level you set for the proximity input - too large and people walking by outside your garage will get a fright. And, the built-in battery back-up works as advertised as the alarm unit continues to function even if disconnected from the bike?s power supply.

Scorpio offers a 14 day, no questions asked refund if you are unsatisfied, but as well as this system works you will not be using it. Suggested retail for the Scorpio SR-i900 Motorcycle Alarm is US$349, but can be found for less if you ask.
